Overview

Douban launched on March 6, 2005, is a Chinese social networking service website that allows users to record information and create content related to film, books, music, recent events, and activities in Chinese cities. It has over 160 million users. The goal of the project is to improve the emotional expression of the app and engage our users. Another purpose is using the splash design to shorten the perception of loading time.

I was the lead designer and owner of this project. I was taking charge of the whole experience from defining the character to telling stories for the splash and established this program from zero to one.

Illustrations for operations

Designed for the daily operation that was associated with special promotions. For example, some activities were to encourage users to share the app with their friends, or to celebrate the significant dates of the Douban app, like the anniversary.

Celebrated international festivals with users, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, Children’s day, and more! Through the splash screen, we expressed a festival atmosphere to users.

Celebrated traditional festivals with users in the lunar calendar, such as Lunar New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, and more!

Serial Stories

During the long holiday season, our users usually went to travel for several days, so we celebrated this long season with our users by telling a traveling story. For example, this story was about a cat traveling. The cat went to a unique place every day.
